Wikipedia's Preventing and repairing dead links and Help:Archiving a source have some helpful guidelines for citations and dead links. In particular, when citing sources for guides and other information that may later be lost (such as an inactive Tumblr account loses its URL, a blog or journal is deleted, a web service changes its help site, an editing program removes its documentation), archiving the linked reference may be very helpful to prevent the loss of information.
